Recently the world’s population officially ticked over to seven billion people; and is expected to keep climbing to around nine billion by 2050.
I live in the Kimberley, a region in the remote north of Western Australia, and apparently we have fewer people per square kilometre here than almost any other place on earth. I suspect one of the other places may be Antarctica.
I can walk on a stretch of beach for miles and not see a soul, or drive along the highway and get excited about a car coming the other way, so it is hard to appreciate this population density figure.
But I fear it may be a different story if you live in Mong Kok. According to the ABC, Mong Kok inHong Kong is the most densely populated place on earth with an average of 130,000 people living inside each square kilometre.
In Australia’s most densely populated area of Sydney, we average 8,000 people in the same kilometre.
When describing her apartment, one of the Mong Kok residents said, “Living standards in Mong Kok can be varied. Currently I live in an apartment that is less than 400 square foot, one bedroom, and monthly rental is 9,000Hong Kongdollars (about $1,000). The area is simply too convenient hence rental of the properties is rising like a sky rocket.”
Another resident went on to say that to get away from it all, many people go shopping or head to the beach.
I think I am going to stop complaining that my house is too small or that the neighbour’s dog barks too loud. And yes, I will cherish my walk along the beach!
